‘Nicest judge in the world’

Judge Frank Caprio was a renowned American judge and politician who served as the chief judge of the municipal court of Providence, Rhode Island. His story is one of compassion, kindness and dedication to justice.

Born on November 24, 1936, in Providence, Caprio grew up in a humble Italian-American family. His father, Antonio, was a fruit vendor and milkman who instilled in Frank the values of hard work and helping others. Despite facing financial difficulties, Caprio’s parents encouraged his education, which became the foundation of his future success.

Caprio’s journey began with delivering milk and newspapers, and he later worked multiple jobs to support himself through school. He attended Central High School, where he was an all-state wrestler, and later graduated from Providence College in 1958. Caprio then taught American government at Hope High School while attending law school at Suffolk University, where he earned his law degree.

Caprio’s career in law and politics spanned over six decades. He served as City Councillor of Providence from 1962 to 1968, advocating for social justice and community development.  Appointed Municipal Court Judge of Providence in 1985, Caprio served for nearly 40 years till 2023, becoming known for his compassionate approach to justice.

Judge Caprio’s approach to justice was centred around empathy and understanding. He believed in considering the individual circumstances of each case and often showed leniency grounded in humanity when warranted.

Some notable examples include:

  • Single mother’s parking fines: Judge Caprio forgave a single mother’s unpaid parking fines, recognizing the financial burden they added to her already strained situation.
  • Young man’s minor offence: He encouraged a young man to learn from his mistakes and turn his life around, even going so far as to have the young man volunteer in the community.

Judge Caprio’s courtroom proceedings were filmed for the TV show “Caught in Providence,” and aired during 2018-20, gaining international recognition and acclaim. Clips from his show have drawn over a billion views online, making him a viral sensation and earning him the nickname ‘Nicest Judge in the World.’

Judge Caprio’s legacy extends far beyond his courtroom. He has inspired countless individuals with his kindness, compassion and commitment to justice. Through his TV show and public appearances, Caprio has shown that justice can be both fair and compassionate.

Sadly, Judge Frank Caprio passed away on August 20, 2025, at the age of 88, after a brave battle with pancreatic cancer. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of judges, lawyers and community leaders.
