Once, philosopher George Santayana came into a sizeable legacy and was able to relinquish his post on the Harvard faculty.
The classroom was packed for his final appearance, and Santayana did himself proud. He was about to conclude his remarks when he caught sight of a forsythia uncurling in a patch of muddy snow outside the window. He stopped abruptly, picked up his hat, gloves, and walking stick, and made for the door. There he turned. “Gentleman,” he said softly, “I shall not be able to finish that sentence. I have just discovered that I have an appointment with April.”
Each flower is an invitation, an appointment with God.
Each song of the bird, and each cloud floating in the sky, is something like a message, a coded message.

George Santayana (1863-1952) was a celebrated philosopher, essayist, poet and novelist. Originally from Spain, Santayana was raised and educated in the US. After graduating from Harvard, he worked as a professor there during 1889-1912, becoming a part of the Golden Age of the University’s Philosophy Department. At the age of 48, Santayana left his position at Harvard and returned to Europe permanently.
Forsythia is a spring-blooming shrub that tends to put out with bright yellow flowers even before the leaves appear each year. The buds form in the fall and stay on the stems over the winter in most cases.
Acharya Rajneesh (1931-1990), known later as Osho, was an Indian godman, philosopher, mystic and founder of the Rajneesh movement. He was viewed as a controversial religious leader during his life. He rejected institutional religions, insisting that spiritual experience could not be organised into any one system of religious dogma. He advocated meditation and taught a unique form called dynamic meditation. Rejecting traditional ascetic practices, he asked his followers to live fully in the world but without attachment to it.
