A shove from the nest

Some people need a little push to be responsible.

Dr. Kevin Leman, in his book Have a New Kid by Friday, shares a letter from Kari in Indiana:

“My son didn’t find a job after college, so he settled back home. Two years later, he was still at home, and it didn’t seem like he was making any effort to find a job … I’d come home to stacks of dirty dishes and Nate sitting on the couch, eating pizza.

It wasn’t until I took your principles to heart and got tough that things changed. I told him that to earn his keep, there were certain things he’d have to do around the house — and I left him a big list. I also stopped paying for cable TV and his Internet service, and I bought only the food I needed and took a stash from my pantry in to work and over to my mother’s.

His first response was shock, then anger. But after three weeks, he knew I meant business. I was asking him to stand up and be a man instead of a baby. Two weeks after that, he started job hunting and now has a job that pays for his own apartment.”
